United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority
Bassetlaw Fusion Cafe
UKAEA was established in 1954 "to produce, use and dispose of atomic energy and carry out research into any matters therewith" by the Atomic Energy Authority Act 1954. Since then a whole raft of Parliament Acts have steadily revised UKAEA’s brief, with many of initial responsibilities transferred to commercial interests as they became financially viable.
Locally, UKAEA’s really significant involvement is Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project at the recently decommissioned West Burton A power station complex in Bassetlaw.
The multi-billion-pound project at West Burton will transform the power station site to support the development of STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant which aims to demonstrate electricity from fusion. The project aims to have construction of the research unit completed by 2040.
