Clarborough Primary School moved into brand-new accommodation in September, 2008 having been a ‘split-site’ school since 1970. This unfortunate arrangement came about when changes to the structure of the community, driven by increased employment as power station construction and other industries developed locally after World War 2, demanded more school accommodation. Prior to that, the Victorian school on Church Lane, Clarborough, had provided the sole accommodation and although the school had been extended considerably in the 1950s and 60s, it had become inadequate both in terms of space and facilities.
As Clarborough expanded through the 1960s, agricultural land and buildings in what is now the heart of the village were cleared and a new school building erected. Originally termed ‘Phase 1’ of Clarborough Primary School’s redevelopment, the new site opened on 3rd September, 1970 as home for the infant classes of the school (Lower Site), older children remaining at the Church Lane (Upper) site. At the time it was confidently expected that further building work would extend the new school (‘Phase2’) so that all pupils could be taught at the Hillview Crescent site. How long that took to be realised!
With the economic turmoil (and cuts) of the early 1970s, ‘Phase 2’ sank into oblivion. For almost 40 years, the school struggled with its two-sites (‘split-site’ to those in education) heritage until the new millenium brought new hope. Finally, in September, 2008 the new school opened on the same Hillview Crescent site, adjacent to the 1970 building which was dismantled on completion of the new building. The Church Lane site then began a torturous route to eventual disposal.
