Some recommended reads...

For something a bit special and free from many of the ‘punch pulling’ aspects of conventional media coverage, why not pick up a copy of the Big Issue - strongly recommended. Similarly, if you decide to subscribe to Shelter you will find their member’s newspaper a real eye-opener to the issues affecting too much of our society.

Peter Frankopan’s The New Silk Roads [Bloomsbury Publishing ISBN 978-1-5266-0742-3] is an eye-opening account of how China is rapidly coming to dominate world trade.

And, finally, while we are talking about reading, why not have a look at Andrew Marr’s The Diamond Queen? As you’d expect from Andrew, this is both highly informative and entertaining. [ISBN 978-0-230-74852-1 MacMillan £25.00].

Staying with Andrew Marr, his A History of the World provides much to think about. He navigates both the familiar and unfamiliar with chapters such as The Case for War, Beyond the Muddy Melting Pot and Dreams of Freedom. With his usual insightful - even provocative - analyses, this is a book to make you think anew about current international issues. [ISBN 978-1-4472-3682-5 Macmillan £8.99].
